Keeping seniors active and helping them socialize, particularly with those close to their own age, is vital to helping them stay physically and mentally healthy for as many years as possible. Fortunately for the many seniors in our city, Suffolk Parks and Recreation has a number of events and programs geared toward older active adults to help accomplish this goal.
One of those is the annual Active Adult Sweetheart Ball, which always takes place around Valentine’s Day. This year, it was on Thursday, with dancing, music, food and fun activities all giving the senior citizens a chance to get dressed up, go out, be with friends and meet new people.
According to the National Institute on Aging, part of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services, physical activity like line dancing has proven benefits for older people, and participating in social activities may also lower the risk for some health problems even as it improves overall well-being. “Connecting with other people through social activities and community programs can keep your brain active and help you feel less isolated and more engaged with the world around you,” the website states.
Folks at the event on Thursday said they appreciated having the event to come together and enjoy themselves. They described it as “fantastic,” “eventful” and “something new to do.”
Raffle prizes, games and a photo booth were among the fun things to do at the event for the more than 180 active older adults.
We appreciate the efforts of Suffolk Parks and Recreation to continue putting on this event and many others for our older citizens. They truly deserve it.
