Seniors enjoy Silver Sneakers

Older Suffolk residents are moving and staying active as part of the Silver Sneakers, a ministry that was started last year at East End Baptist Church.
The Silver Sneakers meet on Wednesday mornings at East End Baptist Church, 1056 Portsmouth Blvd. Participants enjoy chair fitness workouts, mat exercises and other routines that aren’t too taxing on seniors.
“This is more of a recreational ministry to keep our seniors active, and to keep them going and on the move,” said organizer Gregory Lawrence.
The ministry was organized in April for participants ages 50 and older. Participants have also enjoyed different outings since the ministry was formed, such as the 2019 North Carolina State Fair that was held last fall in Raleigh, N.C., according to Lawrence.
More activities are planned for the Silver Sneakers in 2020, including a cruise for senior groups aboard the Spirit of Norfolk in March.
No registration is required for the Silver Sneakers, and their members include seniors from other churches, as well.
“Any senior adult that wants to exercise, they are more than welcome to come,” Lawrence said.
The Silver Sneakers meet on Wednesday from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at East End Baptist Church, 1056 Portsmouth Blvd. A game day with potluck meal, dominoes, checkers and trivia is also held one Wednesday per month.
