One last chance to donate

We’ll be closing out the books soon on this winter’s campaign for the Suffolk Cheer Fund, and that means you have a few more days to get your donation in and have it count for this year.
We accept donations all year long, and any donation that doesn’t buy toys in one year simply gets rolled over to the next year. So there’s certainly never a rush — we’re happy to accept your donation not only in November and December but also in January, April, July, October and all of the other months, too.
We were so thrilled to make our $40,000 goal this year, even after a slow start because of the lateness of Thanksgiving. We hit the goal about a week later than usual, but we did hit it, and we send a big thank-you to each and every one of you who donated or spread the word in some way.
If you’ve never heard of the Cheer Fund, it is a project of the Suffolk News-Herald to raise money to be used to purchase toys for children in Suffolk who are less fortunate. We partner with the Suffolk Corps of the Salvation Army, which purchases the toys and distributes them. Many other groups and organizations also participate in this project, including Suffolk Social Services and more.
The Cheer Fund is an easy way to make sure your hard-earned money goes directly, 100 percent to putting toys — and a little Christmas cheer — in the hands of children right here in Suffolk.
No donation is too big or too small. We’ve had folks give $5, and we have a small number of donations from organizations and foundations in the $2,000 to $4,000 range.
To donate to the Cheer Fund, send a check to P.O. Box 1220, Suffolk, VA 23439 or bring it to the newspaper’s office, 130 S. Saratoga St., from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
We will list your donation in the newspaper, but it can be marked “anonymous” if you like. Donations may be made in honor of or in memory of someone. If you bring the check to our office, we’ll even take your picture as you hand it to one of our staff.
If you’d like to give online, there is a link available on the Suffolk Cheer Fund’s Facebook page.
