The Suffolk Public Library recently announced that it has received further support for its new library initiative from another Suffolk Walmart store.

According to a press release Tuesday, the Walmart store at 6529 College Drive granted the Suffolk Public Library $500 in December, for the library’s “See YOU at the Library” initiative. The Walmart Foundation offers Local Community Grants ranging from $250 to $5,000 “to help support the communities Walmart serves,” the press release states.

The library announced in the Tuesday press release that they received an additional $250 grant from the Walmart store at 1200 N. Main St., raising the total to $750 for the library’s new initiative.

According to the press release, other causes that the Walmart Foundation supports include “finding innovative solutions to healthier food, disaster relief and preparedness, supporting programs for reintegration of veterans and military families, addressing systemic inequities of underrepresented groups, and supporting programs that help local communities thrive.”

The Suffolk Public Library requested local giving funding from the Walmart Foundation to purchase items that will help diversify the library’s collections, with a focus on inclusivity and diversity. The library plans to make learning kits more inclusive by adding world language learning materials, books by diverse authors and more.

“Suffolk Public Library’s ‘See YOU at the Library’ initiative in 2020 encourages people to connect to reading by finding titles that relate to them in identity and experiences and by exploring diverse titles that reflect our diverse population in Suffolk,” the press release states. “Throughout the year the library will host themed events and create book lists showcasing titles that reflect our community.”
