This is a big month for our office. We have passed the $2 million mark in returning money to constituents from federal agencies. Whether it’s a never-received tax refund or missed benefits from the Veterans Administration or absent Social Security checks, our office is diligent and devoted in trying to ensure my constituents get what they are owed. This milestone, more than $2 million back to VA-04 residents, is an important part of my service as your congressman.

It’s also an important month because, having had surgeries recently, I am able to return to Washington, D.C., and to being out and about in the district. This recent illness has shown me, yet again, how critical access to affordable quality health care is for all Virginians. I go back to work recommitted to ensuring available health care, without regard for pre-existing conditions and with reasonably priced prescription drugs. Health care should never be a choice between paying a bill or a getting a prescription. I am determined to advocate every day for affordable and quality care.

Just before Thanksgiving, I was in D.C. for revisions on a critical bill of mine — access to high-speed internet for rural and underserved communities — so very important for so many constituents in my district. Despite robust funding and bipartisan support, rural broadband deployment has continued to lag behind needs. This legislation can address that and help so many receive the service they need.

I was also proud to join my friend and colleague, Natural Resources Chairman Raul Grijalva, for the release of Environmental Justice principles. Environmental justice addresses the concern that environmental ills such as proximity to toxic waste sites, lack of access to potable water, and communities situated near polluting factories happen disproportionately to minority, rural and low-income communities. The principles we released come from the community and address their issues and their perspectives and will help us create a comprehensive environmental justice bill that prioritizes equity and justice for all.
