The Lakeland High School boys’ basketball team got a win over Prince George High School last Saturday afternoon.
Lakeland finished their first official week of high school basketball 1-1 after getting a 74-61 win over Prince George at Meadowbrook High School. It was a strong game for Lakeland who was able to quickly put behind them the Lafayette High School game in which they took a loss earlier in the week.
“We didn’t see this game as a bounce-back game but more as a game where we could correct some things,” Coach Clint Wright Sr. said. “The guys played well out there, and we were able to do some good things. We felt like the loss against Lafayette opened our eyes and helped us realize we will have to depend on each other to have success.”
Raymond Bellamy led the way for the Cavs with 17 points and 13 rebounds. Clint Wright Jr. added 16 points, with Devonte Saunders and Keimari Artis both adding 14 points each. Prince George was led by Curtis Martin, who scored a game-high 25 points. Wright Jr. mentioned that the team needed to go into the game playing together, and he felt like that’s exactly what they were able to do.
“I feel like we played real well as a team,” Wright Jr. said. “As a unit we went into the game knowing we had to play together in order for us to be successful. Certain aspects of the game we lacked against Lafayette we did better against Prince George, allowing us to get our first win.”
Lakeland will be on the road for the whole month of December, so it will be important for the Cavs to be able to muster up momentum before heading into the break as well as playing over the holiday break.
“We embrace the challenge that comes with playing on the road,” Wright Sr. said. “When you go into those gyms, there are more people against you than they are with you. So, we just want to keep going out there and keep being focused and playing the way we know how.”
