Former Nansemond River High School standout Kevin Johnson was selected to the third team All-MEAC.
The Norfolk State University football team had 13 players earn Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference postseason honors, which is a school record. Among them was freshman Kevin Johnson. Johnson, who originally walked on at NSU as a defensive back, earned All-MEAC honors at running back.
Johnson led the team in rushing, going for 468 yards on 86 carries with eight touchdowns. He also caught 13 passes for 200 yards and three more touchdowns. With 11 total touchdowns, that is the most by an NSU football player since the 2009 season. Johnson is also a three-time MEAC Rookie of the Week recipient.
“I felt like this season went good for me,” Johnson said. “Making the change was a little weird at first, but God had a plan for me, and it worked out for the best.”
With such a strong and historic freshman season for NSU, Johnson is looking forward to the offseason and being able to build on his first season.
“This offseason is going to be very important for me,” Johnson said. “I have to take advantage of this time off and get in the lab.”
At Nansemond River, Johnson was both a football and track standout. During his time there, he earned himself his fair share of accolades, earning All-District, All-Region and All-State selections. He also helped earn state and national titles for the WAR track team.
