A local woman was sentenced this week to seven and a half years in prison for a fatal hit-and-run more than two years ago.
The crash took the life of Hope Tara Parham, 46, of Suffolk. It happened in the afternoon of Sept. 26, 2017, in the 1400 block of Holland Road. Police soon announced it was being investigated as a hit-and-run and found the suspect vehicle.
Cory Ann Jones, now 27, was indicted that November on a number of felony charges in relation to the crash.
A judge sentenced her on Monday in Suffolk Circuit Court to a total of 15 and a half years but suspended eight years.
The sentence greatly exceeded the high end of the sentencing guidelines, in part due to the fact that speed was a factor in the deadly crash and Jones got another ticket for going more than 20 miles per hour over the speed limit the very next month in Chesapeake.
Jones was sentenced on charges of involuntary manslaughter, aggressive driving and hit and run. A number of other charges, including felony homicide and lesser traffic violations, were dismissed.
