The Nansemond River High School field hockey team will take on Maury High School in the regional quarterfinals.
The Lady Warriors field hockey team recently finished the regular season with an 11-5 record. That was good for a spot in the Class 5 Region A playoffs in a loaded region, with the new teams moving down into Class 5 Region A. They will match up with Maury Friday afternoon in the team’s quest for a regional title.
Coach Allison Dize is feeling good about where her group is right now. During the last two weeks of the season, Nansemond River won four of its last five games, which included a big win against Western Branch High School to close out the season.
“We wanted to take it game by game,” Dize said. “We have been playing well, and we have been playing pretty consistent, and that’s what we felt like we were capable of doing all season long.”
A significant number of contributors from last year graduated. They had a couple of players return this season, and many thought this could potentially be a rebuilding year for the Lady Warriors. However, they were able to pick up where they left off and once again have a strong year.
“Some people looked at it as a rebuilding season for us, but we saw it more as a reload,” Dize said. “We picked up where we were last season, and we just want to continue to take it up a notch.”
The Lady Warriors believe that if they continue to stay consistent and play like they know how, they have a good chance to advance come Friday afternoon.
“We all know it’s a tougher region this year, and we know we are going to have to continue working hard if we want to be with those top teams and not just behind them.”
Halle Fago has played well for the Lady Warriors all season and has been putting scoring at a high level. Dize was complimentary of the team’s defense that has been very strong as of late, anchored by Alivia Miller and Joy Maus, who have done a solid job.
Nansemond River and Maury will square off at 5 p.m. Friday at Powhatan Field at Old Dominion University. Maury finished the regular season with a 12-4 record and ended with a three-game winning streak.
