A Suffolk man was convicted Thursday on charges of rape, carnal knowledge and indecent liberties with a child after a four-day jury trial.

The jury recommended a total sentence of 40 years in prison plus $20,000 in fines for John Blount Jr., 54.

The victim, who was known to him, was 14 at the time of the assault in September 2016. He went into her bedroom to talk to her about school, and that’s when he raped her, said Chief Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Marie Walls, who prosecuted the case with Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney George Underwood.

A relative walked into the room and saw the girl’s pants were down but didn’t see the assault. But as soon as Blount left, the girl came out of her room crying, “fell to her knees” and told her relatives he had raped her, Walls stated following the conclusion of the trial Thursday.

There was no DNA evidence or physical injuries found, Walls stated. “We had an expert testify you would not expect to find evidence of trauma given her age,” she said.

The girl and her relatives testified, plus the police officers who took her statement, Walls said. Blount also testified in his own defense and denied the allegations.

“The commonwealth was pleased with the outcome, given that the jury listened intently to four days of testimony — including a difficult first day when the victim often cried and stopped during her testimony,” Walls stated.

Some other charges were dismissed during the trial that related to another incident “where the child really couldn’t testify specifically about the dates,” Walls stated.

The formal sentencing is set for Jan. 27.
