Suffolk and surrounding areas are no longer in a drought following Sunday’s rainfall from Tropical Storm Nestor, according to the latest Drought Monitor update.

Most of Suffolk had entered moderate drought phase as of the Oct. 17 update, but it had been categorized as abnormally dry for several weeks. Precipitation in the area since the beginning of August was about 2 to 4 inches below normal.

Tropical Storm Nestor formed quickly in the Gulf of Mexico last week and came up through the Southeast, dumping several inches of rain and helping to solve dry conditions in many areas.

Most of the state remains under drought conditions, but the National Weather Service Wakefield Office stated on Facebook Thursday that the drought is expected to continue to improve over the next few months.
