The Lakeland High School football team fell to 0-5 after a loss to Deep Creek High School on Friday.

The Cavs went on the road to take on a tough, undefeated Deep Creek team. Lakeland fell 48-6. It was another rough outing for the Cavs, who are not only a very young team but also are dealing with some injuries as well. Despite the adversity, Coach Joe Jones liked the way his team never quit.

“They are a really well-coached team,” Jones said of Deep Creek. “I’m familiar with a lot of the coaching staff over there, and for our guys to keep fighting, I was proud of them. We had five offensive starters injured. Each week, we continue to find things to overcome.”

Deep Creek took complete control of the first half against the Cavs, as they held a 35-0 lead at halftime. The Hornets continued their domination in the second half and got the homecoming win for their school.

Jones spoke highly of the coaching staff at Deep Creek, as they were able to come in and turn the program around during tough times. That is a vision Jones has for Lakeland, and he knows while the Cavs are taking their lumps right now, they will see it all paying off soon.

“These guys are still learning the varsity game, and we are continually teaching them,” Jones said. “They are getting it, and we know we have to fight through it, and we will continue to do so. We can’t go around the growing pains and keep fighting.”

Offensively, Lakeland hasn’t been able to get much going the past three weeks. The coaches know they have to keep continuing to figure things out and to keep trying to put the players in the best possible positions on the field.

“We’ve had some bright spots in some different places,” Jones said. “Now, it’s about sustaining the mental toughness, which comes from the experience. All this stuff has to come together at one time, and that’s kind of where we are right now.”

Lakeland will take on Great Bridge High School on the road Friday night.
