Fall is here, which means it’s time for apple-lovers near and far to get their fill at Magnolia United Methodist Church in Suffolk.

Magnolia United Methodist Church is currently accepting orders for its 29th annual Applefest. Orders for apples, apple butter and apple cider may be placed through Oct. 18, and orders can be picked up from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 26 at the church on Wilroy Road.

Members of the church will put people’s orders in their cars with help from volunteers, including Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts of Troop 73. Visitors are also invited to park their cars and purchase apple cider samples, popcorn and delicious grilled meats.

But the main event, as always, will be the wonderful selection of different apples. Returning favorites like Fuji, Golden Delicious, Granny Smith, Stayman and Winesap will satisfy taste buds once again — as will two new mouthwatering additions.

One new apple added to the mix this year is the Suncrisp apple, the product of a cross between a Cortland and Cox’s Orange Pippin, then crossed again with a Golden Delicious.

The other new addition is the Albemarle Pippin, an apple with a rich history going back to colonial times. It was even one of Thomas Jefferson’s favorite apples, according to monticello.org.

Patrons will also enjoy regular and sugar-free apple butter, as well as apple cider, at a community sale that’s cultivated a following far and wide.

“We have people from Virginia Beach, North Carolina, Chesapeake, Portsmouth and Richmond that order apples from us, and they’ve been longstanding customers for quite a while,” said Applefest Coordinator Mary Anderson.

It’s a community event with proceeds that go directly benefit community organizations such as the Volunteer Rescue Squad and the Suffolk Humane Society.

“We turn around and we look at how we can give the money back to those that need it,” Anderson said. “Other than keeping a start-up for the following year, the rest of it we give it away. It’s all about missions and outreach and ministry.”

According to Anderson, the prices for this year’s Applefest are as follows:

A peck of apples, with approximately 10 pounds of apples, is available for $21. A half-bushel, at about 20 to 21 pounds of apples, is $25. A bushel of about 40 to 42 pounds of apples is $39.

Apple butter is available at $4.75 per pint. Apple cider is $5 for a half-gallon and $7 for a whole gallon.
