The Nansemond River High School golf team is gearing up for the Class 5 Region A tournament.

The Warriors are about three weeks removed from the regular season and have been staying sharp on the course. The Class 5 Region A tournament will be held next Monday.

Nansemond River shot its practice round Wednesday afternoon, and Coach Brandon Frye believes that his team got a nice feel of the course at Sewells Point Golf Course.

“We went out there and had a good practice,” he said. “I feel good about where we are right now, and the kids feel that way as well.”

To end the season, the Warriors picked up a tie with Western Branch High School. Nansemond River’s team score of 328 was its best in the last four years. Frye had been talking all year about wanting the team to be playing its best at the end of the season, and the Warriors have been doing that.

“That was big for us,” Frye said. “The score we shot bumps us up in the rankings for regionals. That’s what we wanted was to be playing well towards the end of the season, but that was a good experience for us.”

Nansemond River didn’t qualify for regionals last year, so the progress the team has made over the course of a year has been encouraging. Frye mentioned that without a doubt, the team passed his expectations that he had for the season, and it has been exciting to watch his team grow.

“I wanted to get into regionals this year, and they worked hard to do that,” Frye said. “Their course etiquette is getting better and of course the season isn’t over yet, but the kids have beyond passed my expectations.”

If the team can match its score against Western Branch, it will put forth a strong bid for the whole team to advance to the state tournament.
