Former Nansemond River High School standout Kevin Johnson earned his second Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honor.
Johnson recorded his first 100-yard rushing game for Norfolk State University in its win against Montana State University. His performance helped him earn co-rookie honors, which he shared with Davius Richard of North Carolina Central University.
It only took Johnson eight carries to rush for 112 yards and two touchdowns against Montana State. His yards included a school-record 84-yard touchdown run. He also caught three passes for 26 tards and another touchdown. The Suffolk native added 29 kickoff return yards, which helped him total to 167 all-purpose yards — a career high.
He leads NSU and ranks sixth in the MEAC with 175 rushing yards with 43.8 yards per game this year. He is also ninth in the MEAC with 87.0 all-purpose yards per game. The former Warrior standout did it all at Nansemond River as well. He played on both sides of the ball, earning accolades as both a running back and a defensive back.
“I was blessed with an opportunity and I was blessed enough to take advantage of it,” Johnson said about his role at NSU.
Johnson was an All-State running back during his junior season in 2017. He was an All-Region and All-District performer as a senior last season for the Warriors. He also ran track for Team WAR and was a state and national champion.
