The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy football team went to 0-3 on the season after taking a loss to Christchurch last Saturday.
The Saints took their third consecutive loss against Christchurch. It was a close game, as the Saints fell 24-20. Despite the loss, Coach Mike Biehl was happy with the way his team competed.
“Wasn’t the results we wanted, but I was proud of the way our guys fought,” Biehl said. “I thought we played well enough to win, but we didn’t finish.”
The Saints have been missing a couple of key guys the past couple of games, and it has forced other players on the team to step up. Jaden Freeman had two receiving touchdowns on the day, and Drew Bergeron added a touchdown as well.
Biehl believes the team is on the brink of getting its first win this season.
“I think we are trending in the right direction on both sides of the ball,” Biehl said. “We have guys who are settling into their roles. We are young, and we got some guys who are playing football for the first time in some major roles, but I think those guys are starting to get comfortable.”
After playing three consecutive games on the road, the Saints will return home this Friday when they take on Isle of Wight Academy. The Saints are looking forward to the preparation this week.
“I’m really lucky to coach this group,” Biehl said. “We are very resilient, and we work hard. It’s going to be good to see an opponent that’s from down the road, and it’s going to be exciting. It’ll be a great matchup for both of us.”
