The Worship and Spiritual Growth Team at West End Baptist Church on West Washington Street is once again sponsoring a Backpack for Success program. This program has become an annual tradition for the church in the fall, according to a press release.
The West End Baptist congregation started accepting school supplies and monetary donations to buy backpacks and school supplies in July. Members of the church have filled 44 backpacks for all age groups as of Monday.
Many of the backpacks have been distributed to children in need by the Lakeside Civic League. Kilby Shores Elementary School and ForKids will also distribute backpacks as part of this program, which is meant to support learning and assist families with financial struggles.
“It’s a way of supporting children in their educational pursuits,” said the Rev. Dale Peterson of West End Baptist Church, “(and) making sure they have what they need in school to do their best.”
The Worship and Spiritual Growth team will coordinate a joint back-to-school breakfast with Girl Scout Troop #357 Sunday. The congregation will have a hot breakfast prior to Sunday School lessons and will also be able to see the backpacks, which will be blessed during the Sunday morning worship service.
These Girl Scouts will also participate in the worship service.
