Nobody Fights Alone, sponsored by the Sentara Obici Hospital Auxiliary, will hold a two-for-one purse sale Saturday in front of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on Main Street during the Taste of Suffolk, with all proceeds going to benefit cancer patients who live in Suffolk and surrounding areas.

The event will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., with anyone donating money for a purse getting a second one for free.

The money raised will allow cancer patients and their families to take care of various expenses that crop up during the treatment process, including transportation costs to cover going to and from doctor’s appointments and treatments, gift cards to provide families with money to eat, limited gas and electric bills may be paid to ensure comfort.

The church will also be holding a bake sale, with all of those proceeds going toward its food pantry in memory of Constance Cocco Brooks, who died from leukemia Sept. 25, 2018. Brooks was involved in many of the church’s ministries, including the altar guild, adult choir, Sunday school and Vacation Bible School.

Juel Carr, the project coordinator and a nursery attendant at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer in 2015. Now in remission, Carr does what she can to give back.

“I had so much support,” Carr said. “I want to be able to give back.”

The brand-name purses that are a part of the fundraiser are gently used. Carr said she hopes to have future fundraisers for Nobody Walks Alone.

“After my cancer battle, I wanted to give back because of what I got,” Carr said.

People wanting to donate to Nobody Fights Alone can do so by cash or check.

“Most of us have been impacted one way or the other,” Carr said. “Please come out.”
