The potential for tropical storm conditions in Hampton Roads later this week has increased as Hurricane Dorian continues to bear down on the Bahamas and approach the Florida east coast.
According to the 11 a.m. Monday update by the National Hurricane Center, Hurricane Dorian is about 110 miles east of West Palm Beach, Fla., with maximum sustained winds of 155 miles per hour and moving west at nearly one mile per hour.
The Hurricane Center is forecasting a slow westward to west-northwestward motion during the next day or so, followed by a gradual turn toward the northwest and north. The core of this “extremely dangerous” hurricane will continue to batter Grand Bahama Island Monday, according to the Hurricane Center.
Hurricane Dorian will then move close to the Florida east coast late Monday evening through Wednesday evening, and then closer to the Georgia and South Carolina coasts Wednesday night and into Thursday.
“Dorian is an extremely dangerous category four hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale,” according to the Hurricane Center. “Although gradual weakening is forecast, Dorian is expected to remain a powerful hurricane during the next couple of days.”
Meteorologist Eswar Iyer at the National Weather Service Wakefield office said that residents in Hampton Roads should expect the highest storm impacts Thursday evening through Friday.
“There will likely be some impacts for Hampton Roads,” Iyer said. “With the potential of tropical storm conditions, it’s certainly a very good idea to keep monitoring forecasts and get the latest information.”
