Suffolk resident Monique Scott won $85,458 through the Virginia Lottery, according to a Wednesday press release.

Scott tried the Virginia Lottery game “Print ‘n Play Rolling Jackpot” after she heard that a woman from Suffolk, Shakilya Evans, had recently won more than $30,000 playing that game, according to the press release.

One of those two tickets she bought at Royal Farms on Churchland Boulevard in Chesapeake was a winner. However, she didn’t realize that she won the top prize until she took her ticket to the Virginia Lottery’s customer service center in Hampton.

She was stunned when she learned the true amount, especially because she thought she only won $600.

The Virginia-only, instant-win game has a starting jackpot of $50,000. The jackpot increases with each ticket sold until the jackpot is won.

The game has three price points: $2, $5 and $10. The $2 ticket can win 20 percent of the jackpot, with 50 percent of the jackpot going to winners who spend $5 on their ticket. Those who purchase a ticket for $10 can win the full amount.

Elsewhere in Suffolk, a Norfolk man bought a Cash 5 ticket that won $100,000.

Gilbert Harris stopped for breakfast at Bennett’s Creek Farm Market on Bridge Road. He ordered scrambled eggs, sausage and toast, and also bought a Cash 5 ticket for the July 25 day drawing. He used numbers he has played before — 9, 13, 19, 28 and 32.

He discovered he’d won when he checked the winning numbers later on the Virginia Lottery’s mobile app.

“I said, ‘Wait a minute — I have all five numbers!’” he recalled, according to the press release. “I didn’t believe I would be that calm.”

The longshoreman said he has no immediate plans for his winnings.

Cash 5 drawings are held daily at 1:59 p.m. and 11 p.m. The odds of winning the $100,000 top prize are 1 in 278,256.
