Suffolk will celebrate another year of National Night Out success at a downtown ceremony Tuesday evening.
The Suffolk National Night Out Community Appreciation Ceremony will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the City Council Chamber at City Hall, 442 W. Washington St.
According to the press release, Suffolk’s National Night Out on Aug. 6 saw more than 150 communities, civic leagues, churches and businesses come together for an evening of festive camaraderie with first responders.
These festivities included cookouts, block parties and numerous other gatherings — all to say “No to Crime” in one loud, unified voice.
“National Night Out is a national event which strengthens relationships between the public and public safety agencies,” the press release stated. “The main goal of National Night Out is to bring people together in an effort to eliminate crime.”
Suffolk’s theme this year was “Lock It … Don’t Lose It” in a campaign to remind citizens to lock their vehicles. According to the press release, it’s one of the easiest ways to avoid becoming a victim of crime and has a direct impact on Suffolk’s overall crime statistics.
Suffolk has placed first nationwide for National Night Out five times: 2008, 2009, 2014, 2016 and 2018. The city has also finished in the top five nationwide for thirteen straight years, including a second-place finish in 2015 and 2017 for the city’s population category.
“This year’s event was the biggest and best ever due to overwhelming community support,” the press release stated.
All participating communities and official motorcade tour volunteers will receive certificates in recognition of their hard work and their help in making another successful year for National Night Out in Suffolk, according to the press release.
Community event coordinators are asked to return their provided National Night Out banners to the ceremony. These will be recycled and repurposed into useful items, thanks to a new project with Suffolk Public Works and the Suffolk Art Gallery. Further details on this project are forthcoming.
