Paving work to continue through Aug. 25

Overnight milling and paving work that started earlier this week in the area of North Main Street and Constance Road will last until Aug. 25, according to city officials.

A contractor will have alternating lane closures on both sides of North Main Street between Constance Road and the Lowe’s entrance, as well as on Constance Road between North Main Street and Church Street, and on Constance Road between North Main Street and the entrance to the Hilton Garden Inn Suffolk Riverfront.

City spokeswoman Diana Klink said a pavement condition assessment that was completed in 2016 “identified that the pavement in the area exhibited moderate to major deterioration such as alligator cracking, block cracking, rutting and multiple utility cut patches.”

She said the city’s Public Works Department’s operations division performed a field assessment of the area in 2018 and found additional deterioration, making a mill and overlay project there necessary.

The last time resurfacing was done in the area was prior to 2006 when the city took responsibility of roadway maintenance from the Virginia Department of Transportation, Klink said.

Several utility and development projects in that area have been done since 2006, she said, and with the projects, small amounts of paving were completed along East Constance and West Constance roads.

In April 2014, Main Street was resurfaced just south of the intersection with Constance Road, she said.

The milling and paving work began Sunday and will continue every night from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m., with work expected to be finished by Aug. 25.
