The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office delivered carloads of school supplies on Monday to help elementary school teachers and students. These notebooks, pencils, backpacks and more were donated by Suffolk’s generous community during a collection drive last week.

Sheriff’s deputies collected donations last Friday at the Walmart on North Main Street, and the community responded with seemingly everything that a child may need during the school year.

“As usual, the citizens of Suffolk came out in force,” said Sheriff E.C. Harris.

The Sheriff’s Office collected six total carloads of supplies last week, according to an email from Community Engagement Coordinator Katie Jones.

“They stepped up to the plate and hit a home run,” Harris said about the turnout of donors.

School supplies were delivered Monday morning to Nansemond Parkway Elementary and Elephant’s Fork Elementary. They brought carts and bags brimming with classroom essentials for both schools.

“This is awesome,” said Nansemond Parkway Elementary School Principal Jennifer Conner. “We’re just really appreciate that we were chosen — along with Elephant’s Fork — to be the beneficiaries of this supply drive.”

Teachers will distribute these supplies to children that need them the most. This also helps teachers save some of their own money that they would otherwise spend on supplies.

“It helps fill the needs for the kids that aren’t able to, and it helps our teachers with classroom instruction,” Conner said.
