Charles Harris Sr.

Charles Harris Sr., 76, of 1000 Litton Lane, Suffolk, transitioned on Sunday, July 28, 2019, surrounded by his beloved family. He was the son of the late Mary Harris Thorne, Thad Thorne Sr. and Spencer Dancey.

He received Christ at an early age at Bethlehem Christian Church. A graduate and eminent football player of Booker T. Washington High School, he enlisted and served in the U.S. Army. After his tenure in the U.S. military, he chose a career in masonry, where he mastered his craft as a Master Brick Layer for more than 35 years for Boone Construction. He was a member of the American Legion.

Charles leaves behind to cherish his memory, his loving and devoted wife of 46 years, Vickie Nichols Harris; three children, Bridget Harris Jenkins (Elvin), of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., Charles Harris Jr. (Krystle), of Suffolk, and Vernon Artis (Kimberly), of Chesapeake; 11 grandchildren, VaDelle Harris, JeBria Harris, Robert Bailey III, Ka’ Shawn Silver, Paris Harris, Charles Harris III, Montinus Artis, D’Ericka Artis, Kavion Artis, Kaiden Artis and Dymond Artis; great-granddaughter, Makylar Artis; siblings, Wayne Thorne, Thad Thorne Jr., Delores Harris and Patricia Parker; and a host of other family and friends.

A visitation will take place from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. A celebration of life service with military honors will take place at noon Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, at Kings Grove Pentecostal Holiness Church. He will be laid to rest at Albert G. Horton Jr. Memorial Veterans Cemetery.
