The Lakeland High School football program will hold Football Community Day Saturday.

The Lakeland football family will open its arms to the Suffolk community this Saturday in a community event. The Cavs will have a free youth football camp and a fundraiser fish fry. The youth camp will be available for kids from youth to high school and will be used to teach basic football skills with tournament style scrimmages being held at the end.

With new coach, Joe Jones, at the helm, it gives the Suffolk community a chance to know more about him. They will also get a chance to meet other coaches and players. Along with the fish fry, Lakeland will also have a cornhole tournament as well as live music. This will be the third one Lakeland has put together since Jones has arrived.

“We want to be out in the community, and we want to continuously teach leadership in our program,” Jones said. “Its great to be able to get the community out and be able to give back through football. It’s a great time for kids to come out and learn the game free of charge and learn from coaches. Its all positive for us.”

Jones was hired back in May for his first stint as a head coach. Before being hired at Lakeland, he had spent more than 10 years coaching at Oscar Smith High School.

He was an assistant on the 2011 state championship team and helped the Tigers make multiple state championship appearances. At 31, Jones is hoping to build a successful program at Lakeland as well.

The fundraiser fish fry will be $10 a plate and it will come with fish, fries, a side, a roll and a drink. The youth football camp will be held from 9 to 11 a.m., and the fundraiser fish fry will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
