To the editor:
Thank you for this opportunity to share with your readers a true story of being the benefactor of an unknown gentleman’s gift in the checkout line at Aldi last week.
As I was waiting to put my basket full of groceries on the checkout conveyor, I noticed a stately looking gentleman behind me who had only one item to check out.
I smiled and said, “Sir, would you like to go in front of me?” He kindly stated, “If you don’t mind,” and he proceeded to pass me and move up to be next in line.
I continued to unload my groceries to the conveyor and glanced up to see the gentleman getting checked out. He received his receipt and some money. He proceeded to pick up his bag, turned toward my groceries on the conveyor, laid down some money, and said “Have a good day.” In shock, I picked up the two $20 bills that he had left. My grocery bill was $43.30.
I shared my good fortune with the cashier, and we just expressed our shock at the generous act. Why did he do what he did? Perhaps he wanted to make someone feel good! There are good people all around us who do things just to make a stranger’s day be a good one. Thanks to the unknown gentleman who did just that!
