The Nansemond River High School softball team had a representative on the Class 5 All-State teams.

The Nansemond River softball team had a strong season on the field this year. They went through the Southeastern District competing and winning games over tough opponents. The Lady Warriors earned a No. 3 seed in the Class 5 Region A region. They ended up falling a game short of the regional championship in a close matchup with Menchville High School.

Nansemond River finished with six All-District selections, seven All-Region selections and one All-State selection. Senior Misty Even got the nod on the Class 5 All-State team at first base — an honor for which she is extremely grateful, even though it wasn’t a goal of hers this season.

“My No. 1 goal was the success of my team and pursuing our goal for advancement in our postseason,” she said. “Unfortunately, we didn’t make it as far as we would have liked, but it is an extremely humbling recognition that came with this season for me.”

Even was a second team All-District selection and then went on to be a first team All-Region selection and a second team Class 5 All-State selection. She wanted to make her last season memorable, and she was able to do that. She gives a lot of credit to her teammates for the bond they created and the things they were able to accomplish this season.

“I wanted to create bonds with my teammates that made us better on the field and off the field,” she said. “It helps in everything we do together and how successful we wanted to be as a team this year.”

Last season, Even was an All-Region selection, and she has been recognized throughout her high school softball career. She described her high school career for the Lady Warriors as a blessing.

“I feel extremely blessed to have played at Nansemond River, especially with Coach Gabe,” she said. “I definitely was able to learn and grow more than I could have ever expected. I am extremely grateful for what Nansemond River softball has done for me as an athlete and an overall person.”

Even will go play at the college level, as she will head to Richard Bland College to compete. It was something she said was always a goal of hers since she was young. Recently, NRHS softball alumnae have had strong college careers, and Even could be next in line.
