A community meeting will be held Tuesday evening in the City Council Chamber at City Hall for groups to officially sign up for Suffolk’s 2019 National Night Out festivities. The meeting will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 442 W. Washington St.
Groups will sign up to be included in this year’s festivities and help give crime in Suffolk a “going-away party,” according to a press release. Door prizes will be awarded, and attendees will hear about the importance of police-community partnerships from public safety officials.
The National Association of Town Watch’s 36th annual National Night Out program “enhances the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement under positive circumstances while bringing back a true sense of community,” according to the press release.
Millions of neighbors take part in National Night Out across thousands of communities in all 50 states, U.S. territories and military bases worldwide on the first Tuesday in August. This year’s celebration will take place on Aug. 6.
Suffolk’s 2018 National Night Out activities won first place in the nation for its population category, which marked the 13th year that Suffolk has finished in the top five nationally. Suffolk is also the highest-ranking locality in Virginia by the National Association of Town Watch.
Suffolk won first place in the nation in 2008, 2009, 2014, 2016 and 2018, according to the press release.
