The Suffolk Sheriff’s Office visited the Autumn Care of Suffolk nursing home on Friday morning to deliver handmade Father’s Day cards to residents, just in time for the holiday’s observance on Sunday.

These cards were made by Elephant’s Fork Elementary School students, with well wishes, rainbows, hearts and smiling faces drawn on them.

Suffolk Sheriff’s Office personnel went door to door with more than 100 cards and visited approximately 30 male residents. Leftover cards were saved for staff members and any new male residents in the near future, according to Katie Jones, community engagement coordinator for the Sheriff’s Office.

“Father’s Day is just a good day to celebrate the fathers that are still here, and to hold the others in remembrance,” said Deputy W. Thomas. “Plus, you get the best dad jokes.”

The Sheriff’s Office visits residents at Autumn Care for holidays throughout the year — such as Mother’s Day and Christmas — to spread cheer.

“I think they enjoy seeing the (Sheriff’s Office) come out,” said Autumn Care Activities Assistant Celeste Alston-Daniels. “We always appreciate the (Sheriff’s Office) coming out and bringing joy to our residents.”

Jones, 52, with the Sheriff’s Office said it’s important to show these men that they’re not forgotten and to cherish them while they’re still here. Her father, J.T. Archer, passed away when she was 11 years old.

“We need to cherish our fathers while they’re here, because they won’t be here forever,” she said.
