The Nansemond River High School girls’ soccer team had six athletes represented on the All-Region teams.
The Lady Warriors’ soccer team finished second in the region. Going into the tournament as the No. 6 seed, Nansemond River was able to upset a couple of teams and was almost regional champion. Nansemond River’s late-season run helped boost its number of selections.
Nansemond River had three selections on the first team with Sarah Rhiel, Saleena Lynch and Riley Goss. On the second team, Haley Russell, Sophie Mitchell and Payten Swerda were second team. Sydney Corey and Alex Jackson were both honorable mentions.
Rhiel, Lynch, Russell and Mitchell all were All-District selections as well. Overall, Nansemond River got a lot of stellar play from underclassmen as well as their seniors, as three of the six selections are either freshmen or sophomores.
Nansemond River earned a berth to the Class 5 state tournament. With a strong state tournament run, it is possible Nansemond River can add some All-State selections as well.
Nansemond River heads into the state tournament losing only two of its last 12 games. The Lady Warriors became the first Suffolk public school since 2017 to earn a bid.
