Dog owners can bring their four-legged friends to Lake Meade Park on Saturday for a dog-day of fun.
The Mount Suffolk will hold Paws and Prayers Day from noon to 2 p.m. at Lake Meade Park, 201 Holly Lawn Parkway. The event was originally set for April 20 but had to be postponed due to inclement weather.
This will be a community gathering of dog lovers that will feature a treasure hunt for the pups and costume contest for their precious pets, with people coming together in prayer and a shared love for dogs.
“I just thought it would be a good idea if all us dog owners got together for a service,” said event coordinator Stephanie Kinchen.
Vendors will offer free sample for the dogs while owners peruse their wares. There will also be cotton candy, popcorn and snowcones for the owners themselves.
The “doggy treasure hunt” will have the pooches searching for plastic eggs all around the dog park, with tasty treats inside each of them. There will also be a “collarship” drawing for prizes, Kinchen said.
The costume contest will have categories toy and small breed, medium-large and extra-large dogs.
Blankets, towels, dog toys and treats and all types of food may be donated for the Suffolk Humane Society.
Owners will also be able to pay their respects for pets that they’ve lost over the years at a table with the “Rainbow Bridge” prayer. Small cards will have the prayer written on them as participants light candles for dogs that have crossed the Rainbow Bridge, Kinchen said.
“I just wanted people to (be able to) acknowledged the pets that have passed, as well,” she said. “Even if you do have a new pet, you never forget the one that you lost.”
