The Suffolk Farmers’ Market will kick off another season of delicious treats and open-air entertainment this Saturday.

The market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday under the open-air pavilion behind the Suffolk Visitor Center, 524 N. Main St. It will be held during the same time slot each Saturday until Nov. 23.

The new season will kick off on Saturday with about 25 to 30 vendors, and specialty vendors will participate in a number of Saturdays this season, according to Tourism Development Manager Theresa Earles. All Farmers’ Market activities are free and open to the public.

“The first Saturday of the month, May through November, is marked by lots of family fun activities,” Earles wrote in an email, “such as the Teeny Tiny Farm Petting Zoo, a bounce house, live music, exhibitors, lecturers, book signings, kids’ crafts and more.”

There will be a bounce house this Saturday, live music by Justin Luke McCurry, crafts with the Suffolk Art League and a visit from the Suffolk Public Library’s Library2Go Mobile. Vendors will offer baked goods, jams and jellies, honey, pickles, salsa, organically raised meats and poultry and all sorts of handcrafted gifts, Earles wrote.

The Suffolk Farmers’ Market began in the summer of 2005 with just four vendors at Market Park, beside the Seaboard Station Railroad Museum downtown. It moved to the Suffolk Visitor Center in 2012 with greater visibility at the Main Street and Constance Road intersection, according to Earles.

The market has changed over the last 14 years into a Saturday morning for families to shop and have fun in Suffolk’s vibrant weekend atmosphere.

“You’re already up and out of the house with the family, so just swing by the Market before heading downtown to do a little shopping and stopping for a bite to eat,” Earles wrote. “It’s a leisurely way to experience downtown Suffolk and support local businesses.”
