A newly published Suffolk author has taken her island childhood and turned it into a charming story about two likable lizards.

“Ian and Igor: Inquisitive Island Iguanas” was released by FriesenPress in March. The children’s book was written by Suffolk resident Chloricia Myers and illustrated by her brother, Carron Lake.

The story follows Iguana brothers Ian and Igor as they look for adventure and tasty treats in the Virgin Islands. Myers grew up in the Virgin Islands with her brother and said that she always wanted to write a book, so she pulled from her childhood for her first published work, which she intends to be the first in a series.

She said that she wanted to introduce the majestic culture and habitat of her native islands to children stateside, including her own children.

“I wanted to be able to tell a little bit of the culture, so the experiences the iguanas encounter in this book are my childhood experiences,” she said. “I’ve woven my childhood experiences into the lives of these iguanas.”

Her experiences were put into 40 colorful pages that were lavishly rendered by Lake. She said that it was a fun, collaborative process to get the images out of her head and onto the page.

It was easy for Lake to draw the scenes she had in mind because they had spent their childhood together in many of the same island locales. It was just a matter of him putting these iguanas into their colorful memories.

“I told him I wanted vivid, very bright colors,” Myers said. “In the tropics everything is just in your face. The water is so blue (and) everything is green, but still different (and unique).”

The book also includes an activity section for vocabulary words and reading comprehension, while also teaching children some of the islands’ native plants. As a teacher, Myers was able to incorporate the right activities for summer reading sessions, she said.

“The book will provide activities for children to do during the summer to keep their skills sharp,” she said.

Myers will be the special guest for a book signing at the Hillpoint Elementary School PTA meeting on May 14. The school is located at 1101 Hillpoint Road, and the meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m.
