Suffolk Parks and Recreation is inviting citizens this Sunday to its Arbor Day Celebration that’s filled with free, family-friendly activities set in nature. The celebration will be from 2 to 4 p.m. at Bennett’s Creek Park, 3000 Bennetts Creek Park Road.

There will be a kids’ nature demonstration from 2 to 2:45 p.m. with a native animal show-and-tell presentation. Outdoor Recreation Program Specialist Christian Prohaska will have snake skins, turtle shells, skulls, footprints and other things that identify local wildlife.

“I will talk about what they eat, where they live, and what to do if you find one,” Prohaska wrote in an email.

There will be a reading of proclamation at the park from 2:45 to 3 p.m. to go with a tree-planting ceremony, signifying Suffolk’s ongoing dedication to a “happy and healthy environment” and to creating beautiful parks for citizens, Prohaska wrote.

This will be followed by a nature walk and tree identification workshop from 3 to 4 p.m. The nature walk will be led by a local tree biologist along the park’s various trails, according to Prohaska, during which parents and their children will learn more about the trees that stand tall locally.

The entire day is free and open to the public with no registration required.

“This is a great small event to get your family outside to one of our local parks to learn something new about our native wildlife and the many species of trees around us,” Prohaska wrote.
