The Gamma Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma Society International will hold its annual Author’s Luncheon on March 23 at Roger Brown’s Restaurant and Sports Bar in Portsmouth, 316 High St. This chapter includes active and reserve members from Suffolk, Chesapeake, Virginia Beach and Portsmouth.
The luncheon will begin at noon. Tickets are $25 and include lunch and a presentation by the guest author, with proceeds going towards scholarships for Portsmouth Public School students.
Tickets for a themed basket drawing, including a wine basket and a movie night basket, will be available for donations of $1 for one ticket or $5 for six tickets.
This luncheon has been raising money annually for Portsmouth student scholarships for more than 30 years and counting, according to Donna Saffold, who’s co-chairing this year’s luncheon with Shirley Wimbrough.
Each year has brought a fascinating speaker, and that tradition will continue with Sadeqa Johnson, a former public relations manager who spent years working with well-known authors like J.K. Rowling.
Johnson’s debut novel “Love in a Carry-on Bag” was the recipient of the 2013 Phillis Wheatley Award for Best Fiction. She also wrote “And Then There Was Me” and “Second House From the Corner” — both of which were hailed by Essence magazine — and received the Black Pearl Magazine Author of the Year award in 2017.
Copies of her books will be for sale at the luncheon, and she will sign them after her presentation and question-and-answer segment.
