Representatives are not leaders

To the editor:
Responding to the Feb. 10, 2019, letter (“Clergy issue ‘call to prayer’”) by the preachers calling for prayer for “our leaders,” I would like to make a notation.
While I strongly agree with the writer’s sentiment that we ought to pray for a better political climate in Virginia, and I beg every believer to do so, I must point out that the politicians are our representatives and not “our leaders”!
This is a common oversight, yet not an insignificant one, in that these representatives, once labeled erroneously as a “leader,” quickly get “the big head” which leads to the ugly climate in which we now find ourselves.
Indeed, the parties may have “party leaders,” but in this country, we, the people, speak for ourselves, through our representatives! My church has recently recognized this fact, and when we pray, we use the correct terminology. Thank you.
