Psimas swimming his best

Nic Psimas was voted Suffolk News-Herald Player of the Week after winning two gold medals in the Division II meet while also being named Swimmer of the Meet.
Often in sports, athletes tend to save their best for last. Psimas is doing so in the pool, saving his best season for last in his senior year. The Nansemond-Suffolk Academy senior has been swimming at a record-breaking pace all year. He recently took home two gold medals in the Division II meet and was also selected Swimmer of the Meet for his performance that day. He won both his individual races at the meet but didn’t finish top three in his relay. He was quite surprised to receive the award but was proud of what he was able to accomplish.
“I knew I had a chance to win Swimmer of the Meet, but I wasn’t sure if I could get it,” Psimas said. “I was proud of my two wins, but the 100 free felt like the bigger accomplishment because that race was so close. Overall, it was a good way to start off our championship meets.”
Swimming has been a part of Psimas’ life since he was 6. He is a two-sport standout at NSA and knew this year was going to be his last swimming, so he wanted to go out strong. For his last season in the pool, he wanted to have personal-best times in the 50, 100 and 200 free events. He was able to qualify for every event he swam in this season and also broke a 20-year school record in the 100 free. Psimas swam a time of 49.13, which is now the new school record.
“I think it has been a great last season,” he said. “I swam a personal best in everything this year. I really wanted to go out strong and have a great season.”
Psimas has a strong chance to bring some individual state titles home for the Saints. Psimas normally listens to music before his races and just focuses on each event he competes. He believes all the time he spent in the pool before this year set him up for the success he was going to have for his senior season.
Though Psimas is a standout swimmer, he will be attending Virginia Tech in the fall to play baseball.
