Families can visit Morgan Memorial Library this Saturday for an afternoon of super heroics that’s steeped in black history.

“Black and Super: African-American History in Comics” will be held on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Morgan Memorial Library, 443 W. Washington St. This event is free and open to the public.

There will be a trivia contest filled with black superheroes from comics, movies and television. Children will enjoy hearing library staff talk about some of their favorites in story time, and they will also screen the documentary “White Scripts and Black Supermen: Black Masculinities in American Comic Books” by director Jonathan Gayles.

Participants will make their own masks, buttons and other arts and crafts and enjoy various games. There will also be nine vendors at the library, including local artists and cartoonists. The winners of the “Everyone is Super” short story writing contest will be announced.

It’s an exciting event for fans in downtown Suffolk — especially the younger readers — that fits right in with the library’s Black History Month programming, said library associate Cory Bland.

“We thought this would be a cool, fun way to have people learn different aspects of black history,” Bland said.
