A public hearing on up to $96 million in new debt for the city is the headlining issue on the City Council agenda for Wednesday’s meeting.

The council will meet at 7 p.m. in City Council chambers, 441 Market St. A work session precedes the regular meeting at 4 p.m.

The city proposes to contract new debt up to $96.1 million, as well as restructure some existing bonds. The proceeds will be used to finance the costs of upcoming capital projects, particularly a new city hall and E-911 emergency call center, water source development, treatment plant upgrades and sewer system upgrades.

Also on the regular session agenda are three ordinances aimed at establishing guidelines for the renaming of streets and the naming of city facilities.

During the work session, City Council members will receive an update on the damage caused by the May 24 severe thunderstorm. The storm packed winds of up to 100 miles per hour in some places, knocking over several trees and causing approximately $475,000 in damage to homes throughout the city.

In addition, City Council will hear a report on the enforcement of the ordinance against temporary flags and banners. At the April 18 meeting, a small business owner appeared to complain that she had been required to take down a group of flags that were drawing attention to her business, but yet other businesses around town have flags that also appear to be in violation of the ordinance.
