The Golden Fold will hold its third annual Carter G. Woodson Jubilee on Feb. 16 at Northern Shores Elementary School, 6701 Respass Beach Road. This event is free and open to the public from 10:30 a.m. to noon.

The theme for this year’s jubilee is the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s, featuring music from the era along with poetry and literature readings. There will also be light hors d’oeuvres.

Donations will also be accepted for the Golden Fold, a male mentoring group sponsored by Suffolk’s Alpha Iota Graduate Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. Lead Advisor Richard Green said the theme changes each year to highlight a different part of black history.

“This program is a program that’s been done for the last three years, and each year it’s grown,” Green said.

There will also be a portion of the program dedicated to honoring Carter Woodson, the founder of the Association for the Study of African American Life and History and one of the first scholars to study African-American history.

He’s been cited as the “Father of Black History” and in 1926 launched the “Negro History Week” celebration, the precursor of Black History Month, according to naacp.org.
