Former Nansemond-Suffolk Academy head football Coach Lew Johnston will be the new offensive coordinator at Nansemond River High School.

Johnston, who spent five years coaching at NSA, will now oversee Nansemond River’s offense. Known for his Wing-T style offense, Johnston will bring his prowess to Nansemond River. At NSA, Johnston was the coach for the Saints’ most recent state championship that came during the 2015 season.

Coach Justin Conyers is familiar with Johnston, going back to his playing days in high school and coaching. He played for Johnston for three of his four years at Western Branch High School. Conyers was the defensive coordinator for Johnston at NSA the year they won the state title in 2015. Johnston had served in advisory roles for a few teams in the South Hampton Roads area and had advised Nansemond River when they made their switch to the Wing-T right before their state playoffs run in 2017.

Johnston has not had an official coaching title since he left NSA back in 2015. Conyers mentioned that he discussed the opportunity of having Johnston come aboard with his assistant, which then led to him offering him the job. After discussing it with his family, Johnston decided to accept the role for the Warriors.

“He is a great mentor to me,” Conyers said. “He has been very supportive of me over the years. He has been coaching football since before I was born, and I am happy to have him on board with us. He has done some good things in his career, and we are hoping he does the same here.”
