For the second time this season, the Suffolk Christian Academy girls’ basketball team won an in-season tournament.
The SCA Lady Knights put together three wins in a row to secure the Victory Christian New Year tournament in North Carolina over the weekend. It is the second tournament win after SCA took home the Portsmouth Christian Holiday Tournament back in December.
“This was a big deal for us,” Coach Kristy Patton said. “It was good seeing us come off a pretty significant break, and we were still able to play well and come out with victories. We worked on some specific things over the break that helped us when it came down to it.”
The tournament started with SCA playing against Heritage Christian Academy, which SCA won 60-9. The Lady Knights held Heritage scoreless for two quarters of that game. It was an all-around team effort with Jadyn Patton leading the way with 15 points. Brooke Johnson and Townee Steele added eight a piece, with Laura Cornette adding seven.
Next, SCA took on Victory Christian in the second round, with SCA taking that game 33-30. Both teams started off close, with SCA taking an early 8-7 lead. Victory kept it close, but SCA went into the half with an 18-15 lead. The Lady Knights kept their foot on the gas, outscoring Victory 10-4 in the third. Victory made a strong push in the fourth, but SCA was able to hold them off. Cornette led the way with 13 points that game, with Patton adding nine. The win led SCA to a championship game with Bethel Christian.
After starting off a bit rocky in the first half, SCA was in good shape against Bethel Christian, only being down 10-17. In the second half, both teams went back and forth, and the game came down to overtime. SCA took home the championship with another close win — 31-30. Patton led with nine points for the team in the championship game. Cornette added seven. Channing Acree brought down 11 rebounds for the Lady Knights.
“All weekend, the girls were making timely buckets in situations we have worked on in practice,” Patton said. “When you get in close situations in a game, that shows what kind of team you are. These girls have a competitive heart, and all of them have the will to win. We are focusing on getting things together.”
SCA is multifaceted in the sense that they don’t rely on just one player. They get contributions all around the board from each player. “We don’t have any heroes, and I like that about our team,” Patton said. “We are starting to come together as a whole.”
Laura Cornette was named the tournament MVP, and Jadyn Patton was named to the all-tournament team.
The Lady Knights will take this momentum into a Thursday matchup with Lawrence Academy.
