The Suffolk Quilters Guild recently completed 36 quilts to donate to the Lake Prince Woods retirement community.

This project is one of two service projects they do in a year, but this one was different from ones they have done in the past.

“The woman that handles the projects found out that Lake Prince Woods wanted some quilts, and they said they need 40,” said guild president Lori Murdock. “We only had a month and a half until they needed them. Everyone pitched in, and it was phenomenal.”

The guild is made up of 10 to 15 members, and Murdock believes their love for quilting made the monumental task possible.

“It’s easy when you love what you’re doing,” Murdock said. “I could sew all day long, and I think a lot of us are all like that. If we can give back while we are doing it, it’s even better.”

To make the process easier, Murdock had the group put the tops of the quilts together, and five to six people attended a workshop and put the quilts together.

“I am really very proud of the people that helped. They really put a lot into it, and I appreciate it,” Murdock said. “I didn’t think we would be able to present them, because we wouldn’t have had enough.”

Murdock and her quilters were able to pull through and be just four quilts shy of their total goal, and she knows that is something to be proud of.

The quilts all feature some kind of different design.
“They are all different. Some are just blocks, but some of them were made and donated. Those are a little more elaborate,” Murdock said.

The guild even had a woman donate fabric because she wasn’t able to quilt herself, and Murdock was able to use the fabric to make up five quilts.

“They are all very different, and everyone pitched in to do their part to get them done in a short amount of time,” Murdock said.
