Church gives away clothes

Suffolk Christian Church on Monday finished its second annual two-day-long event to give away clothes to citizens in need.
Suffolk Christian’s clothing drive gave away almost 2,000 articles of clothing, eclipsing the total of roughly 1,100 last year.
Deb Munn, the event’s organizer, couldn’t believe the turnout from the weekend.
“This time we had way more people turn out,” Munn said.
Munn attributes the larger turnout to the number of fliers passed out in the community, and she hopes that the momentum can continue for other events.
The need is still apparent in Suffolk, and Munn wants to hold multiple clothing drives a year for the community.
“I want to try three times a year and, ambitiously, maybe even four times,” Munn said.
With the large number of people coming to pick out clothes, it was a blessing that there was a constant flow of donations. Donations were coming in just days before the event, and Munn showed up at the church early Saturday, because she thought she would have to sort even more donations.
Despite the large crowd, Munn enjoyed every second of it.
“It was so pleasant. Everyone was so grateful and polite,” Munn said. “It was like going to a department store. Actually, it was probably better than a department store.”
Not only was Munn happy to help the community, she is happy to be a part of a church that encourages its congregation to have these events.
“I said that I would like to do it, and we had one meeting to figure out what we should do and what we shouldn’t do. Then we did it,” Munn said.
Munn had dedicated volunteers to help through the entire process, which included sorting through clothes, hanging them and helping to bag clothes for those that received them.
Frances Carr is a new member of the congregation, and this was her first time helping with the event.
“It’s a wonderful feeling to help. The need is there,” Carr said. “This is the second year, and I hope that the people that come remember to share the news about the event.”
