The deadline for adopting angels is coming up soon, and the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority still has roughly 100 children that are in need this Christmas season.

SRHA has once again been sponsoring its annual Angel Tree, featuring the names of children that need to be adopted for the season. SRHA is the only “Angel Tree” holiday assistance program serving exclusively the 2018 Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher residents.

Children up to 17 years of age have submitted their wishes for toys, coats, hats, scarfs, clothing, bikes, electronic devices and other gifts. According to Executive Director Tracey Snipes, they received 199 names that needed adopting last year.

This year they’ve more than tripled that number since they started taking names in late November, reaching 600 children — or angels — in total.

“The need is out there,” Snipes said. “I think everybody told a friend is what happened, so this year we had 600.”

The last 100 or so names need to be adopted in time for gifts to be returned Dec. 17. Time is short, but Snipes is confident that the community will do its part to help these children.

“We’re extremely appreciative. These are children who otherwise may not have anything for Christmas. We’re making a difference in our communities with our families,” Snipes said.

Donors can donate or pick up an angel tag at the SRHA’s main office at 530 E. Pinner St. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Call 539-2100 for more information.
