Christmas is coming, and the Suffolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority is once again asking for generous citizens to adopt an angel and help save the season for a child in need.

SRHA is sponsoring its annual Angel Tree, featuring the names of children that need to be adopted for the season. Children up to 17 years of age have submitted their wishes for toys, coats, hats, scarfs, clothing, bikes, electronic devices and more, and residents can stop by the office at 530 E. Pinner St. to sponsor an angel.

However, anyone who wants to adopt an angel does not have to feel obligated to buy only what’s on the wish list, according to Resident Services Specialist Phyllis Harrison. The donor has the option to also purchase any age-appropriate item for the child in question.

According to Harrison, SRHA is the only “Angel Tree” holiday assistance program serving exclusively the 2018 Public Housing and Housing Choice Voucher residents. The organization was able to successfully serve 199 children at Christmas last year, and there are more than 600 children from Public Housing and Housing Choice Vouchers communities who are requesting gifts this year.

“Many of the children are appreciative and filled with joy on Christmas Day due to having their wishes granted for Christmas, which may not have occurred otherwise because of their family’s financial constraints,” Harrison wrote.

Donors can donate or pick up an angel tag at the SRHA’s main office at 530 E. Pinner St. from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily through Dec. 13. Gifts will be distributed on Dec. 19-20 from noon to 3 p.m.
