The Nansemond River High School field hockey season ended with a regional semifinals loss to Gloucester High School.
Gloucester and the Lady Warriors met in the Class 5 Region A semifinals, where the Lady Warriors were shut out 6-0. In the quarterfinals last week, Nansemond River got a win over Hickory High School.
“Unfortunately, the game didn’t go as well as we hoped for,” Coach Allison Dize said. “Gloucester has a top of line program. It kind of gave us a friendly reminder of what we need to continue to work towards to be a competitive team in the state.”
However, Dize said the season went better than originally expected. In a tough region, Nansemond River finished in the top five. In the Class 5A region alone, it possesses some of the best field hockey teams throughout the state. Dize believes this team set the precedent for where future Lady Warriors teams want to be and surpass.
The Lady Warriors had a strong senior class, with seven seniors who were all contributors to the team this season. Some will go on to play in college, while Dize awaits the return of her solid set of underclassmen for next season.
“I am definitely excited about what we have returning,” Dize said. “We have some younger players moving up with some players returning, and we should pick up where we left off.”
Dize was able to get her 100th win with this group, which was one of many positives of the season.
