One dead in train wreck

One person died in a train wreck on Thursday evening in downtown Suffolk.

The crash was reported at 7:54 p.m. at the intersection of East Washington Street and Moore Avenue. It involved an Amtrak train and a dump truck, according to a city press release.

Police confirmed the fatality, but city spokeswoman Diana Klink said details on the deceased and where the person was at the time of the crash were not yet available.

Amtrak spokeswoman Kimberly Woods wrote in an email that Amtrak train 125 was heading to Norfolk from New York at the time of the incident. There were no reported injuries to customers or crew members on the train, she stated. Sixty customers are on the train.

The train did not derail, according to the city press release.

The investigation remains ongoing, and additional information will be provided as soon as it is available.
