Suffolk football week nine power ratings

Three out of the four Suffolk teams remain in playoff positioning headed into week nine.

Week eight was filled with ups and downs last week. Lakeland High School was able to get a surprise win, while Nansemond-Suffolk Academy took its first loss of the season. However, despite the wins and losses from last week, not much changed in the rankings.

Even though it took its first loss last weekend, NSA remains No. 1 in this week’s Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division II poll. The loss came against a Norfolk Christian team that is under the VISAA Division I umbrella. NSA does get to face the No. 2 team in the Division II rankings, Fredericksburg Christian Academy, this Saturday, which should be a good matchup for NSA.

Lakeland has gained some steam in the Class 3 Region A ratings, but they still remain on the outside looking in. They got a big win over rival King’s Fork High School last week. It was the second win of the season for the Cavs. It looks as if a win this week against Hickory High School can boost Lakeland up higher in the ratings to solidify a spot.

King’s Fork dropped back a spot from fourth to fifth after the loss to Lakeland. It was only the third loss of the season for the Bulldogs, who are in a very good 4A region. King’s Fork will be on the road this week against a Deep Creek High School team that is ranked ahead of the Bulldogs in the region. A win against Deep Creek could push the Hornets down and push the Bulldogs up.

Nansemond River High School remains in the No. 4 spot in the 5A region. If the playoffs started today, the Warriors would play at home for at least one game. After a win over Deep Creek last week, Coach Justin Conyers was confident that the Warriors have a chance to win out to finish the season. They have a home matchup against Great Bridge High School this weekend to continue to work on their playoff positioning.

With two games left, there isn’t much time, but it is possible all four Suffolk teams will be back in the playoffs this year. There is also a chance that at least half of those teams can host more than one playoff games in Suffolk.
