Nansemond River High School got its fifth win of the season with a home win over Deep Creek High School.

It was a good win for Nansemond River, who felt like if they could win Friday they had a good chance to win out the rest of the season.

“You always feel good when you’re able to get a big win,” Coach Justin Conyers said. “We still have a way to go, but I feel like this is the first complete game we played all season.”

After both teams went blank on the scoreboard in the first quarter, the Warriors took over the second. Kevin Johnson scored on a short run to give the Warriors a 7-0 lead with about five minutes left in the quarter. On the following possession, a turnover for a touchdown put the Warriors up a quick 14-0 with three minutes left to go in the half. From there, the Warriors went into a halftime 14-0 lead.

In the third quarter, Deep Creek cut the lead down only one score towards the end of the third. However, before the end of the third quarter, a JaQuelle Harrell rushing touchdown put the Warriors back up 21-7 to end the third.

During the fourth quarter, Nansemond River’s suffocating defense left no room for error. They ended with three total defensive scores for touchdowns with two coming in the fourth quarter alone. Josh Knight added a rushing touchdown late in the fourth to give the Warriors a 41-7 win. Knight, Joeziah Autrey and Reshawn Williams all scored on defensive touchdowns.

“We feel like we have one of the best defenses around,” Conyers said. “I think we showed that out there.”

Nansemond River will shift its focus to Great Bridge High School at home.
